We've been doing a lot of gardening around here over the past week. With Spring finally here the clothes are lighter, the days warmer and the birds are chirping away so it's time to plant. We have neglected our garden a bit since Ava showed up on the scene but now she's old enough to happily participate in the planting and weeding experience without eating dirt at every turn. She has had a wonderful time examining the worms, plants and dirt, repeating her current mantra "What's that?, What's that?, What's that!"
Of course all of Ava's productive planting gets to be a bit too much. So she looks at Mommy with the tilt of the head and says "Naked?" A quick dip in the water, some splashing with the hose and of course mud to be washed off and she's ready to plant again. I think this is a trend we'll see all Summer long.
We're going in a new direction this year with our garden. We've figured out what isn't that successful in our yard and with another year of drought we can't waste water on what doesn't do well. We now have a big strawberry ("gobbie") patch with 4 different varieties, an herb patch, a new blueberry bush, rhubarb (which I'm still holding out hope for), squash and cucumbers. Add the grapes, raspberries, apples, plums, apricots and fledgling lemon, lime and orange trees and with a little luck we'll have a good crop.
